City of Lockport Travel Advisory and Storm Related Updates 12/23/22

The City of Lockport is calling for a TRAVEL ADVISORY within city limits for the remainder of the Winter Storm Warning from 10am December 23 through 10 am December 25, 2022, at which time conditions will be re-evaluated to determine necessity and/or further action.

Travel could be difficult with areas of icy conditions and freezing temperatures. High winds are also expected. The City of Lockport cautions travelers to avoid unnecessary travel whenever possible due to winter weather conditions making driving difficult and unsafe.  When driving is necessary, use extreme caution and drive slowly.

If an emergency arises, please call 911. If you have any questions or other needs, please call our non-emergency number-716-433-7700. Thank you.

Road Closure: We have an emergency road closure on Nixon Place between Lincoln Ave and Hoover Pkwy due to a major water leak.  All the leaking valves are secured with traffic barrels and lighted barricades.  LPD, LFD, and Niagara County Dispatch have been notified.  Emergency access to all houses on Nixon will be from Lincoln Ave. The parts will be in early next week.

Garbage Pickup: IMPORTANT UPDATE: Modern Disposal has informed us that due to the storm, all of their collections in Niagara County are being cancelled. Next week they will do a double pickup. Unfortunately their trucks will not be able to accommodate extra bags, but they will pick up extra totes. If you have any personal totes that you can use, please set them out and they will be collected next Friday. They apologize for any inconvenience.

Safety Tips

  • Stay off the roads as much as possible.
  • If you must drive, drive slowly. Allow for extra travel time, and exercise extreme caution when traveling. Use major streets or highways for travel whenever possible.
  • Pedestrians should exercise caution and avoid slippery surfaces; some ice may not be visible. Wear sturdy boots that provide traction to reduce slipping. Use handrails when using stairs.
  • Take care when walking on snow and ice, especially if you are an older adult. Seniors should take extra care outdoors to avoid slips and falls.
  • Have heightened awareness of cars, particularly when approaching or crossing intersections.
  • If you have to go outdoors, wear dry, warm clothing and cover exposed skin. Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered. Wear a hat, hood, scarf, and gloves. Stay alert for signs of hypothermia, like intense shivering or dizziness, and anyone who experiences these symptoms should seek medical attention or call 911.
  • Be careful when shoveling snow. Follow your doctor’s advice if you have heart disease or high blood pressure. Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who may need help in cold weather &mdashs; especially older adults or people with disabilities — to make sure they are safe inside and have heat.
  • Immediately tell your building superintendent, property manager or owner if you do not have heat.  If the problem is not fixed,  quickly go to a warm place, such as a friend’s or family member’s home. If you stay at home, wear additional layers of clothing to keep warm. If you need a place to stay,  Call 716-433-7700
  • Improper use of portable heating equipment can lead to fire or dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Take precautions to ensure you are heating your home safely. Do not heat your home with a gas stove or oven, charcoal grill, or kerosene, propane, or oil-burning heaters.
  • Always keep an eye on heating equipment. Never leave children alone in the room where a space heater is running. Turn it off when you are unable to closely monitor it.
  • Be careful not to overload electrical circuits.
