Filing Fee: A non-refundable $25.00 application fee must accompany each application. Make checks or money orders payable to the City of Lockport.

Vacancies: The eligible list established from this examination will be used to fill vacancies as they occur in the Lockport Police Department.

Salary: Under negotiation.

Residency Requirement: Every officer initially employed by the City of Lockport must live within Niagara County.

Duties

Primary duties include routine patrol, assisting in criminal investigations, and apprehending offenders. Officers usually work under the direction of a higher-ranking officer but must exercise sound judgment in emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or at least 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited or NYS-registered college/university at time of appointment.
  • Special Note: Up to 30 of the 60 required credit hours may be satisfied by a U.S. Armed Forces “GED” report of test completion.

Special Requirements

  • Age: 19 + on exam day; 20 + for appointment. Not older than 43 on exam day (see Military exceptions in announcement).
  • Citizenship: U.S. citizenship required at time of appointment.
  • Driver’s License: Valid NY State operator’s license required at appointment and throughout employment (attach a copy to your application).

NOTE: Felony conviction bars appointment; certain misdemeanors or other offenses may also bar appointment.
Candidates are subject to psychiatric evaluation, polygraph testing, and an extensive background investigation.

Calculators are not permitted.

Physical Agility

Candidates who pass the written test must meet Municipal Police Training Council physical-fitness standards (available from the Civil Service Commission on request).

Cross-Filing for Multiple Exams

If you are taking other local government exams on the same day, submit a Cross Filer Form to each agency at least two weeks before the test date and tell them where you intend to test.

Veterans’ Credits

Qualified veterans may apply for additional credit. Submit the Veterans’ Credit application and DD-214 between your exam application date and establishment of the eligible list. Active-duty candidates may receive conditional credit but must later document qualifying service.

Reimbursement Agreement

If an officer leaves the Lockport Police Department for any reason other than termination within 60 months of hire, the officer must reimburse a portion of the City’s training and outfitting costs (“Investment”) per the schedule below:
